In this article below, well-regarded and experienced consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, Mr Amer Raza, explains what a hysteroscopy is, and how is it generally performed.

What is a hysteroscopy?

It is a common procedure that is carried out to check and diagnose problems inside the urethra cavity and treat them. It can be used to investigate the existence of fibroids, endometrial polyps, irregular bleeding, and postmenopausal bleeding

How is it performed?

The hysteroscopy technique can be divided into two main categories: under local anaesthesia in an outpatient setting, and general anaesthesia in an in-patient setting. I always recommend patients to take ibuprofen and paracetamol before their procedure to deal with their pain. A camera is inserted into the woman's womb, and the vagina and cervix are both cleaned with an antiseptic solution.

Is it painful?

There is a degree of pain and discomfort during a hysteroscopy procedure and I make sure to tell my patients before the surgery that it can be stopped at any time if they are not able to cope with the pain.

What can I expect immediately after a hysteroscopy?

Patients can expect a bit of bleeding after the procedure. This is completely normal and will resolve soon after the procedure. I would recommend patients to take a single dose of antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection.
