In this article below, Mr Sameer Trikha, a highly accomplished and regarded consultant ophthalmologist, details what xanthelasma is, what causes it, and how it can be most effectively treated and prevented.

What is xanthelasma?

Xanthelasma refers to the development of small, yellowish plaques or patches on the skin, typically around the eyelids. These patches are composed of cholesterol deposits and are usually painless. While xanthelasma itself is benign and doesn't impair vision, it can be cosmetically bothersome for some individuals.

What are the causes of xanthelasma?

The exact cause of xanthelasma isn't fully understood, but it's often associated with lipid metabolism disorders, such as high cholesterol levels or other lipid abnormalities. Factors contributing to its development may include high cholesterol, genetic predisposition, and/or metabolic disorders.

What are the main symptoms of xanthelasma?

Xanthelasma typically presents as yellowish, flat plaques or patches on the skin, particularly around the eyelids. These patches may vary in size and number, ranging from small, barely noticeable spots to larger, more prominent areas.

How is it treated?

While xanthelasma itself doesn't pose any health risks, many individuals seek treatment for cosmetic reasons or due to concerns about underlying lipid abnormalities. Treatment options include:

  1. Topical treatments.
  2. Cryotherapy.
  3. Laser therapy.
  4. Surgical excision.

Can the condition be prevented? If so, how?

While it may not be possible to prevent xanthelasma entirely, certain lifestyle modifications can help reduce the risk of its development. These include:

  • Maintaining a healthy diet
  • Regular exercise
  • Managing underlying health conditions
  • Regular health checkups
