Ms Aseel Bedan is a renowned consultant ophthalmic surgeon in London and Surrey who specialises in cataract surgery, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. She is also expert in macular disease, including age-related macular degeneration as well as retinal vein occlusion.
Ms Bedan obtained her medical qualification from the University of Baghdad in 1993 and then went on to qualify as a consultant ophthalmologist with a degree from the Council of Arab Board of Ophthalmology in 2004. She then spent several years working at Iraq and Dubai’s leading hospitals before moving to the UK, where she furthered her training in Ireland and received accreditation by a number of professional bodies including the International Council of Ophthalmology in 2009 and the European Board of Ophthalmology in 2013. Ms Bedan also became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Glasgow in 2011 and a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2014. She later undertook a two-year medical retina and research fellowship at Western Eye Hospital, from 2015 to 2017.
Throughout her esteemed career, Ms Bedan has held specialist and consultant in ophthalmology posts at various notable centres in the UK: Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust in Kent; Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital in Dublin; Cork University Hospital and University Hospital Limerick. She currently practises at Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where she sees private patients since 2019. Ms Bedan additionally practises privately at BMI Hendon Hospital.
Ms Bedan has been actively involved in teaching and training the next generation of ophthalmic surgeons throughout her career. She has also co-authored numerous academic papers which are published in peer-reviewed journals.
