Mr Ashish Khurana is a consultant orthopaedic and spinal surgeon based in Newport, Wales. He specialises in spinal trauma, complex degenerative spine surgery including for the neck and back and treatments for herniated discs (disc prolapse) alongside spinal fusion, spinal injections and minimally-invasive spinal surgery. He practices privately at St Joseph's Hospital, Sire Cardiff Hospital and offers e-consultations (the first consultation is 20 minutes long). He also works for the NHS at Royal Gwent Hospital and the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.
Mr Khurana's skills and knowledge in the mechanical principles of orthopaedics allows him, an honorary clinical tutor for the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, to provide an expert-level service to his patients. He also uses radiofrequency ablation and open and minimally-invasive fixation techniques, including cementation, as well as treating metastatic spinal tumours. Mr Khurana takes pride in his outcome assessment procedures where he uses Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs).
He graduated from The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in Vadodara, India, with an MBBS and also received a Masters in Orthopaedics from the respected institution. Following this, he moved to the UK where he completed an MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering at Cardiff University, higher-specialist training in trauma and orthopaedics on the Welsh Rotation and a fellowship at the prestigious spinal unit of Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham. He also has global experience and was awarded a travelling fellowship to the internationally-esteemed spinal unit at Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong.
Mr Khurana is an active member of various spinal organisations including the British Association of Spinal Surgeons (BASS), where he is an executive team member and professional practice lead, Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh (FRCS Ed) and the North American Spine Society (NASS). He is also keenly involved in research and teaching, with numerous articles publicised in peer-reviewed publications. He has presented at various national and international events, and he is a reviewer for scientific journals and an editor for orthopaedic in-training exams.
