Dr Ewan McKay is a consultant cardiologist based in Chester, Cheshire, who specialises in advanced heart failure, pulmonary hypertension and complex heart valve and haemodynamic assessments. Dr McKay is highly skilled in all areas of general cardiology including chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations, blood pressure problems and more.
Dr McKay has completed a sub-speciality training programme in heart failure and complex device implantation including defibrillators and cardiac resynchronisation devices. Dr McKay has passed the American board examinations in cardiac pacing and complex devices and heart rhythm management via the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners and is a certified cardiac device specialist (CCDS).
Following this, Dr McKay was a senior fellow undertaking additional training in mechanical circulatory support and heart-lung transplantation via an internationally-accredited fellowship programme. Consequently, Dr McKay is one of only a few consultants that routinely undertake the complex evaluation and haemodynamic assessment of patients prior to transplant surgery, prediction of RV support devices following complex valve intervention and pulmonary hypertension therapies.
Dr McKay privately practises at Nuffield Health The Grosvenor Hospital in Chester and his NHS base is the Royal Liverpool Hospital - Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Dr McKay is actively involved in clinical research and advocating for the profession, using his work to promote research and development in cardiology. He has had various papers published in peer-reviewed medical journals, presented as an invited lecturer at multiple national and international conferences and has been the Young National Ambassador for the acute cardiovascular society of European Society of Cardiology ESC for the last three years.
Dr McKay is a skilled practitioner in his field of interest with an impressive educational history. He graduated from the globally-renowned University of St Andrews, Scotland, with an intercalated BSc in Medical science. Following this achievement he was awarded MBChB from the University of Manchester in 2006. Dr McKay is heavily involved in teaching and training of undergraduates, postgraduates and physicians associates. As a recognition of his skills and experience he was appointed as Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Liverpool in 2017.
Dr McKay has repeatedly been recognised for his professional skills and knowledge having been awarded Fellowships of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and London (FRCSEd, FRCSEng). Dr McKay has also been recognised internationally by his peers in cardiology, having been appointed to the prestigious Fellowship of the European Society of Cardiology.
He also applies his expertise in medico-legal work as a self-employed accredited expert witness.
