Dr Ian Arnott is a revered consultant gastroenterologist in Edinburgh specialising in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), video capsule endoscopy, colonoscopy, gastrscopy, diarrhoea, constipation, and abdominal pain.

Dr Arnott attended St Andrews and Manchester universities and underwent gastroenterology training in South East Scotland. Once finishing this in 2004, Dr Arnott travelled to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) as the blinder fellow in the David Geffen School of Medicine. He is on the specialist register for gastroenterology in the UK.

He has a number of active research projects. Whilst training, Dr Arnott completed and MD assessing prognostic aspects of inflammatory bowel disease. Other areas of study include the genetics of IBD, acute severe ulcerative colitis, novel serological markers in Crohn's disease, the role of biological therapies in clinical practice, and many more. He has written more than 100 peer-reviewed papers and contributed chapters to field-related books. Additionally, Dr Arnott has been involved in a variety of multi-centre clinical trials at the initiation and completion stages.

Dr Arnott also has a significant interest in the development of IBD services and quality of care. He was clinical director of the UK IBD audit for 10 years. This national audit assessed the quality of care of over 20,000 people with IBD and had driven care standards since. He also sits on the IBD UK, the national group that defines standards of care for IBD in the UK and is the IBD lead for the Modernising Patient Pathways programme in Scotland. He is a physician advisor for the national charity Crohn's and Colitis UK.

Additionally, the University of Edinburgh has made him an honorary senior lecturer. Dr Arnott has undertaken medicolegal work for more than 10 years, where he has an act in equal proportions for the defence and the prosecution on aspects of luminal gastroenterology and only what he is involved with on a day to day basis in clinical practice.
