Dr John McKenna

Dr John McKenna is a highly esteemed consultant dermatologist and dermatological surgeon based in Belfast. He specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of various skin problems, including psoriasis, rosacea, pyoderma, and skin cancers like melanoma and basal cell carcinoma, and has particular expertise in the surgical management of skin cancers and skin cancer wound healing. Dr McKenna currently practises at the Belfast Skin Clinic and at hospitals part of the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. 

After graduating from the University of Glasgow in 1999, Dr McKenna returned to Belfast, where he completed most of his dermatology training. He then went on to practise advanced dermatological surgery for complex skin cancers at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London, becoming one of the few dermatological consultants in the UK to complete a Mohs Micrographic Surgery training fellowship in addition to their general dermatological training. In 2008, Dr McKenna took up his NHS consultant dermatologist post at University Hospitals of Leicester with specialism in surgery. He founded the hospital’s Mohs Micrographic Surgery service that is now offered there.

Dr McKenna also has decades of research experience, and has been the principal investigator for several NHR (National Institute for Health Research) adopted national studies. He is currently a collaborator on the on-going research into keloid scarring and experimental medical imaging of basal cell carcinoma. He is proud of the high quality treatment that he is able to offer to his patients, and in 2017, received one of the top three highest patient approval feedback ratings for consultants across all specialities in Leicester.
