Mr Jonathan Howell is a renowned consultant orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in hip replacement and revision surgery. He performs surgery for trauma and hip preservation. Since 2004 he's been a consultant at the Exeter Hip Unit. Mr Howell is internationally renowned as a seat of best practice and innovation in hip surgery. He is dedicated to achieving the very highest standards of safety and the best results for his patients. He is actively involved in research and keenly follows the latest developments in the field of hip surgery.

Mr Howell is actively involved with the design and development of the Exeter total hip replacement system. This procedure has consistently outstanding results on joint registries around the globe. As a passionate advocate of education, Mr Howell teaches hip replacement techniques to visiting surgeons and also on international courses. He is the treasurer of the British Hip Society and aims to promote the highest level of training, education and research for his trainees so that they can also provide the very best care for patients. Mr Howell qualified in medicine in 1991, after studying for five years at King's College in London.

He went straight into the Royal Air Force medical branch for six years of training as a junior surgeon and he gained the fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1996. For his specialist orthopaedic training, he was lucky enough to have the celebrated surgeon Professor Robin Ling OBE as his research supervisor. He won the young investigator of the Year 1999 due to his research into the basic science of the Exeter hip. This accolade was awarded by the British Orthopaedic Research Society. It also led to his MSc degree in orthopaedic engineering, which was awarded to him by Cardiff University.

Mr Howell completed his final orthopaedic fellowship exams and moved to Vancouver with his wife and three children. During his time there, he attended the University of British Columbia when he became an expert in North American techniques for complex and revision hip and knee replacement surgery. In 2003 he moved back to England and pursued further hip fellowship training at the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre, he was appointed as a consultant to the Hip Unit there in 2004. Since his appointment, Mr Howell has continued to develop his skills in complex hip replacement, revision and hip preservation techniques. He continues to research and has published multiple scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters.
