There are various symptoms of sensitive skin there’s no absolute golden rule but on the whole it usually means that people find their skin feels irritated, dry from time to time, doesn’t response well to changes in atmosphere, so hot weather, or very cold weather, cold wind, going into a swimming pool – all of those things will irritate sensitive skin. Just be aware of your skin – it’s a question I’m often asked when I’m discussing things with patients – do you become aware of your skin during the day, does it feel slightly dry or irritated? Are you reaching for moisturiser at lunchtime? All of these things suggest that the skin barrier function isn’t optimal and maybe you do have more sensitive skin. What should I look for in my skincare if I have sensitive skin? If you’re trying to manage sensitive skin at home I think it’s very important that the first step is all about the cleanser for me if you’re constantly stripping the skin barrier using heavy soaps or shower gel on your face you’re going to damage even a non-sensitive skin barrier so using a very gentle cleanser that’s preferably going to put some nutrients and some hydration back into the skin is incredibly important. And after that using a suitable moisturiser which isn’t full of perfume, that is going to be very gentle and hydrating and really calm and hydrate the skin barrier. So with sensitive skin it’s all about protecting and building up the skin barrier so it can have a better function, that way the skin is less irritated and also will lose water less and do its job. Also anti-inflammatory products like niacinamide are great because they calm down irritated skin but they also promote ceramides in the skin which is the fat layer which really help to stop water-loss. Why do you recommend La Roche-Posay? I recommend La Roche-Posay to my patients - a gentle cleanser, a really effective moisturiser and suddenly they go from having constantly irritated, red, slightly dry skin to having skin that feels robust and starts to gets a glow.
