Professor Marjan Jahangiri is a renowned and distinguished consultant cardiothoracic surgeon who specialises in valve surgery, in particular aortic valve replacement (minimally invasive technique), coronary artery bypass graft surgery with complete arterial revascularisation, surgery for aortic aneurysm and ablations for atrial fibrillation.
In 2001, Professor Jahangiri was appointed as a consultant cardiac surgeon and senior lecturer at St. George’s Hospital, University of London. She made history by becoming the first female professor of cardiac surgery in both the United Kingdom and Europe in 2007. Professor Jahangiri’s clinical interests span a wide spectrum within cardiac surgery. She specialises in surgery of the aorta, including aneurysms, and is skilled in performing cardiac surgery without stopping the heart.
Professor Jahangiri has contributed significantly to understanding of diseases of the aortic valve and aorta in addition to neurocognitive protection during cardiac surgery. She has played a pivotal role in developing minimally invasive aortic valve surgery and major aortic procedures. Her research output includes over 250 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and numerous abstracts and communications. She operates on approximately 250 cases annually. Professor Jahangiri leads one of the largest cardiac surgical services in the United Kingdom. She is the author of several national and international guidelines.
