Dr Ritu Malaiya is a highly regarded and esteemed consultant rheumatologist who specialises in inflammatory arthritis, osteoarthritis, vasculitis, osteoporosis, connective tissue disease, and chronic pain. At present, she practises at the New Victoria Hospital.
Dr Malaiya, who is also an expert when it comes to treating joint issues, including rotator cuff pain, tennis elbow, and carpal tunnel syndrome, has gained an extensive amount of experience in relation to managing complex pain conditions such as fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), gout, polymyalgia rheumatica, lupus (SLE), and Sjogren’s syndrome. She earned her degree from King’s College London and completed her postgraduate medical training in London over 15 years ago.
Throughout her career, Dr Malaiya has worked at esteemed institutions like Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, St George’s Hospital, and King’s College London, honing her expertise in rheumatology. She has successfully secured funding for research, including the NIHR Greenshoots grant, which facilitated patient enrollment in studies on rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and vasculitis.
Additionally, she obtained funding to develop services, establishing an adolescent and young adult clinic at King’s College Hospital and providing psychological support for the rheumatology department at Epsom and St Helier Hospital. This work was recognised as a finalist for the BSR Best Practice award in 2022 for “empowering adolescents and young adults with chronic inflammatory conditions across South London, Kent, Surrey, and Sussex and improving holistic outcomes.” As a GMC-registered educator, Dr Malaiya is dedicated to advancing the educational needs of undergraduate and postgraduate trainees, as well as other medical professionals.
