Professional statement

Mr Stephen McGillion is a leading consultant orthopaedic spinal surgeon based in Hampshire, specialising in scoliosis, back pain and spinal surgery for conditions such as spinal fracture, trauma, fusion and spinal cord injury. He practices privately at Nuffield Health Wessex Hospital, BMI Sarum Road Hospital and Spire Southampton Hospital alongside his NHS work at the Wessex Spinal Unit at University Hospital Southampton.

In addition to his NHS clinic, Mr McGillion provides spinal oncology and trauma services under NHS emergency cover to a population of approximately four million.

Further specialisms of Mr McGillion are degenerative conditions of the cervical and lumbar spine, taking in common problems such as disc herniations that lead to nerve compression.

Mr McGillion's noted clinical achievements are reflected in his education, extensive medical training and previous experience. This includes an undergraduate degree from Barts and The Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry and he completed his specialist training in spinal surgery at Great Ormand Street Children's Hospital, Kings' College Hospital London and University Hospital Southampton.

When he became consultant orthopaedic spinal surgeon at University Hospital Southampton in 2012, then treating both children and adults, he assisted in the establishment of a regional referral service for complex adult spinal deformities for South Central England. Mr McGillion continues to develop this service in the present day.

Mr McGillion is chairman of the Wessex Spinal Network and his academic interests currently lie in the challenges encountered in complex adult spine surgery. He is especially interested in pseudarthrosis, which he has recently been peer-review published in, and rod failure in long-fusion constructs

Furthermore, Mr McGillion has a fellowship in complex paediatric and adult spinal surgery from The John Radcliffe Hospital and Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford and actively passes on his knowledge by training clinical fellows.
