La disfagia, o incomodidad al tragar, se refiere a la dificultad para tragar o tragar alimentos, y es más común en pacientes de edad avanzada. En muchos casos es una consecuencia de accidentes cerebrovasculares, Alzheimer, Parkinson o traqueotomías, enfermedades que causan problemas en la lengua, los músculos de la garganta y el esófago. Los tratamientos prácticos se centran en evitar que los alimentos se atasquen: ejercicios para fortalecer los músculos de la mandíbula, sentarse en posición vertical, esperar tres horas después de comer para irse a dormir, ingerir alimentos en pequeñas cantidades y acompañarlos con abundante líquido y comer lentamente .
