Charing Cross Hospital is a general teaching hospital in Hammersmith, London. The hospital provides a range of acute specialist services, has a 24/7 accident and emergency department and hosts the hyper acute stroke unit for the region.

The hospital is part of the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and is a teaching hospital of the Imperial College School of Medicine. It plays host to the West London Neuroscience Centre. There are also buildings that are a part of the West London Mental Health NHS Trust on site. Charing Cross Hospital hosts the largest and oldest gender identity clinic in the country, with an average of 150 operations performed annually. The hospital has pioneered the clinical use of CT scanning.

Despite the name the hospital is not actually situated in Charing Cross. Charing Cross Hospital has been located in Hammersmith since 1973 although it was originally established in 1818, miles away in central London. The hospital went through various location changes before settling at its current site in Hammersmith.

Maggie’s Centre at Charing Cross Hospital

Maggie’s Centres are a network of drop-in centres across the United Kingdom and Hong Kong that help anyone who has been affected by cancer. They offer support, information and practical advice to patients and their families. Maggie’s Centre in London opened in April 2008 at Charing Cross Hospital and was the first purpose-built one in England. Michelle Obama visited the centre in 2009 and in October of that year it was given the 2009 Stirling Prize from the Royal Institute of British Architects. The £20,000 prize money was donated to the cancer care centre.

Charing Cross Hospital parking

There is a small number of general and disabled car parking spaces and it is encouraged to use public transport to travel to the hospital.

General parking bays are at the front of the hospital and parking costs £2.40 per hour. There are seven pay and display machines on site that are all sign posted.

There are 25 disabled parking spaces on site which are free for disabled badge holders. It is imperative that when using the disabled parking bay, that the valid blue badge appears in the windscreen of the vehicle.
