Have you recently been, or are you currently considering transforming the appearance of your eyelids? A blepharoplasty procedure could then very well be the most suitable option for you.

In our latest article, Mr William Townley, a well-regarded, skilled, and trusted consultant plastic surgeon, details how exactly a typical blepharoplasty operation is performed, and what recovery from the procedure entails for patients.

What is eyelid surgery, and how is it performed?

Eyelid surgery, also referred to as blepharoplasty in medical terms, is a plastic surgery procedure that aims to create far more youthful-looking eyes for patients wishing to improve the overall appearance of their eyes. This is achieved by carefully removing excess skin and fat deposits from the upper and/or lower eyelids.

The goal of the procedure is to reduce signs of ageing, such as puffiness, bags, and drooping skin. The ultimate objective is to transform the eyelids’ appearance.

Who is the ideal candidate for eyelid surgery?

The ideal candidate for blepharoplasty is someone who wants to address their heavy, puffy upper lids, or their bags under the eyes, or perhaps a false tired or angry appearance. The ideal candidate will also be fit enough for surgery.

What happens during eyelid lift surgery?

Typically performed on an outpatient basis using either local or general anaesthetic, eyelid lift surgery typically takes between one to two hours to complete. Eyelid surgery is performed through incisions made either on the inside of the eyelid (transconjunctival) for lower blepharoplasty, or within the natural crease of the upper eyelid for upper blepharoplasty.

I personally favour a natural approach for lower blepharoplasty, repositioning fat through an internal eyelid incision (scarless approach) to deliver a smooth junction between the eyelid and cheek, which is the hallmark of a youthful face.

What is blepharoplasty recovery like?

It is quite common for patients to notice mild discomfort, bruising, and swelling for the first week after blepharoplasty. Measures such as medication, elevating the head, and applying cold compresses can all greatly help mitigate discomfort and control swelling during this initial period of healing. Most patients are able to return to work and resume their normal activities after around seven to 10 days.
