The Hammersmith Hospital

The Hammersmith Hospital London is a major Hospital situated in west London. It is run by Imperial College Healthcare and offers a wide range of services including being the specialist heart attack centre for the region, providing 24 hour emergency care for heart attack victims. The Hospital also boasts a leukaemia wing and the West London Renal and Transplant Centre.

The hospital’s origins go back to the turn of the 20th century and during the First World War the site was used to treat wounded soldiers. Today, the hospital is known globally for its world class research. The Hammersmith Hospital is also an important teaching hospital and formed part of the UK’s first academic health science centre. The Medical Research Council’s (MRC) presence is a further boon for the hospitals research department.

Travelling to Hammersmith Hospital

Hammersmith Hospital, despite the name, is actually located near White City, to the north of Hammersmith. The full Hammersmith Hospital address is;

If you are travelling to the hospital by public transport, the closest London Underground stations are East Acton and White City, which are both on the Central Line. East Acton station is a 10 – 15 minute walk from Hammersmith Hospital – alternatively you can head to Du Cane road and take buses 7, 70, 72, 272, 283 and N7 to Hammersmith Hospital.

White City station is also only a 10 – 15 minute walk to the hospital, or a short bus ride away from the hospital. You can takes buses 72 or 272.

Alternatively, Wood Lane Underground station is close by and is served by the Circle Line and the Hammersmith & City Line. The station is just over 15 minutes’ walk from the station – alternatively a short walk to Sheperd’s Bush will allow you to take buses 72 and 272 to the hospital.

The nearest overground station is Sheperd’s Bush for those travelling from further afield.

For international travellers, there are numerous airports that serve London, with good connections from Heathrow, Luton, and London City airport.

Hammersmith Hospital Parking

Travelling by car around London can be difficult due to the congestion and lack of parking spaces. For this reason, it is recommended that you avoid travelling to the hospital by car.

If you do need to travel by car, it is suggested that you plan your journey in advance. There are pick-up and drop off points as well as limited parking spaces. Parking costs £2.40 per hour and is situated on Artillery Lane.

For blue badge holders, disabled bays are also available, but again, spaces are limited. They can be found to the front and the rear of the building.

Hammersmith Hospital Rating

Hammersmith hospital is revered around the world as a research centre. The latest Care Quality Commission CQC report (CQC) rates care as good and receives generally good scores on the NHS Family and Friends Test, which seeks to allow patients to provide feedback to healthcare providers on their experience.
