COVID-19 in the UK: daily updates
 

24/03/2020

  • The National Health Service has stated that a total number of 6,650 people have been diagnosed with coronavirus in the UK and 335 people have died.
  • Two more people in Scotland have died after testing positive for Covid-19, first minister Nicola Sturgeon has said, taking the death toll total in the country to 16.
  • The Japanese prime minister and International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach have agreed to postpone the Olympic Games until 2021.

23/03/2020

  • The UK has been placed under lockdown. Boris Johnson is ordering police to enforce a strict coronavirus lockdown and has informed the British public that they ‘must stay home’.
     

The prime minister has said:

- Social events are now banned.

- Shops that are considered to be non-essential must remain closed until further notice.

- People are only allowed to leave their homes for essentials, exercise, and work.

- Public gatherings of more than two people are now banned.

- The police will have the powers to fine people who do not comply with the rules.

People caught breaking the new UK lockdown rules will be fined £30 and might end up in court if they refuse to pay. The amount of the fine is also under review and could rise.
