On the Channel 4 show Live Well Longer, around 20 women were studied to look at the effects of giving up alcohol for a month. The results were astounding – from weight loss to lower blood pressure, and even the possible reduced risk of developing cancer. We asked liver specialist Professor Kevin Moore, who featured heavily in the programme, to explain what this means – and whether a “detox” from alcohol can really work.
The liver is estimated to perform 500+ vital functions in the body. If your doctor suspects you may be having a problem with your liver, they may refer you to a specialist called a hepatologist. Professor Kevin Moore explains what a liver specialist does, & the kinds of patient he is able to see.
The risks of excessive drinking are numerous and include liver disease. In general, it is only people who drink heavily for many years who develop alcohol-related liver disease but everyone is different. Thankfully the liver has a tremendous ability to recover.
