Many of the consultations in health centres are because of paediatric intoxication, although the number of consultations seem to have not increased in recent years thanks in part to better health education for families and safety controls. Intoxications consist of accidental contact with toxic substances that can cause serious health problems and even lead to life-threatening situations. In the case of paediatric intoxications, most usually happen at home due to children's accidental intake of medicines, cleaning products or phytosanitary products. That is why it is very important to keep any toxic product or medicine out of the reach of children. Insect or animal bites can also cause intoxication. Food poisoning may also occur. A complete physical examination of the child is required for diagnosis, and treatment will vary depending on the poisoning.
