A pilonidal cyst, also known as sacral cys, is a disease, is caused by the accumulation of hair at the base of the spine (coccyx area). It mainly affects young Caucasian men with long hair. Its origin is still unclear; it might be congenital or acquired. The problem of the cyst occurs when hair follicles become infected, developing a pilonidal abscess (an accumulation of pus). The symptoms are pain and dimples in the area and the diagnosis is made by a t physical examination by a specialist. Treatment requires local anaesthetic and is either incision and drainage (where the wound is packed with gauze which must be changed regularly or marsupialization where the cyst is drained and the wound is sewn up.
