Ultrasound scans for Diagnostic imaging

An ultrasound scan uses a handheld device or probe that is moved over the skin of the area being scanned, using sound waves to record the echoes that bounce off different parts of the tissue and bones to produce an image of the area under the skin.

What is an ultrasound scan?

High-frequency sound waves are used during an ultrasound scan, also known as a sonogram, to produce an image of a portion of the body's interior.

An ultrasound scan can be used to keep track of a developing child, identify a medical issue, or direct a surgeon during specific operations.

How does an ultrasound scan work?

An ultrasound works by passing a small device called an ultrasonic probe that emits high-frequency sound waves over an area of the body. Although you can't hear these sound waves, when they reverberate off various body parts, they produce "echoes," which the probe detects and converts into a moving image. While the scan is running, this image is shown on a monitor.

How do I prepare for an ultrasound scan?

Before you have an ultrasound scan, you may be asked to drink water and not go to the toilet in the days before, to make sure that you have a full bladder, which allows for a more accurate image.

You may also be asked not to eat in the hours before the ultrasound scan appointment.

Depending on the area of the body being scanned, you may be asked to wear a gown, which will be provided to you.

What happens during the ultrasound scan?

An ultrasound scan usually lasts between 15 and 45 minutes, depending on the area of the body being scanned. The scan will be performed by a radiographer or a sonographer, who will guide you through the procedure and be on hand to answer any questions you may have.
