In one of our latest medical articles below, Mr Harun Thomas, an esteemed consultant oncoplastic breast surgeon, talks about breast pain, including some of the most effective home remedies for patients suffering from breast pain.

What are the different kinds of breast pain?

There are two types of breast pain. The first is cyclical breast pain. As the name suggests, this varies with the menstrual cycle and is often at its worst just before the woman’s period. The second type is non-cyclical breast pain, which is not related to the menstrual cycle.

Cyclical breast pain is caused by various hormonal effects on the breast. During the menstrual cycle, the body and the breast prepare for pregnancy. During the second half of the menstrual cycle, the breasts undergo certain changes so that if the woman becomes pregnant, the breast can go on to produce milk.

Non-cyclical breast pain is usually caused by factors not including the breast. This could be from the nearby muscles or joints or other parts of the body. A common cause is pain from the neck or back radiating to the breast. Sometimes, infections or problems in the breast can cause local breast discomfort.

What should I check for when I examine my breasts at home?

I always encourage women suffering from breast pain to do a breast self-examination to check for any lumps, skin changes, and/or nipple discharge.

What are some effective home remedies for breast pain?

Certain non-medical remedies like evening primrose oil or star flowers oil may help some women. Evening primrose oil should not be taken if you suffer from epilepsy or if you are pregnant. Application of ibuprofen gel to the painful area can often bring some relief too.

When should I see a doctor for breast pain?

If the breast pain is persistent, very severe, or if you notice any other changes in the breast, please see your general practitioner as soon as possible.

What happens in extreme cases of breast pain?

In extreme cases of breast pain, medications to block your oestrogen hormones can be tried. These medications do unfortunately carry with them significant side-effects and hence, are not generally encouraged for breast pain. Please discuss with your doctor before any hormonal medications are taken.
