We’ve asked one of our top dentists Dr Eugene Marais to explain how long recovery takes and what you can do to ensure you have the best possible results and the optimum smile.
Who is a candidate for immediate dental implants?
Immediate loading of dental implants is usually required in cases where all of the teeth are missing in one or both of the dental arches (edentulous arches).
Can you have the procedure done on your first appointment?
Yes, you can. Provided you send the information required in advance so we can do your treatment planning, we can do the whole planning remotely and treat you when we see you. An important note is that informed consent needs to be given before any treatment can be initiated.
Are there any risks to the procedure?
Yes there are risks and complications related to any dental procedure, and with implant dentistry, they are generally:
- Infection is the greatest risk and antibiotics are given. All efforts are made to remove any infection in the mouth prior to placing implants.
- Failure of implants, which usually relates to infection or incorrectly loaded, or too few implants thereby under-engineering the structure
- Never damage in the lower jaw could cause numbness, which can be temporary but in some cases, it could be permanent.
At your consultation, these risks and complications will be carefully spelt out in order for you to make an informed decision about your treatment.
How long does recovery take?
In most cases, recovery takes about three to five days, and the medications regime that we follow ensures that recovery time is optimal.
What does the patient have to do to ensure treatment success?
Post-operative care and maintenance are essential and after the bridge is fitted a visit to the hygienist is required to educate the patient in new habits to keep the mouth healthy. A regular revision with the dentist is also good to ensure the function is correct. Homecare is important too and there are many adjuncts to help maintain a healthy mouth, implants or not!
