Growing up in India, Mr Mriganka De, leading Birmingham-based consultant ENT surgeon, wanted to be a medic or engineer, and his parents encouraged him to do what he liked. Although he always thought he wanted to be a general surgeon, with experience, he realised that the concept of general surgery doesn’t exist anymore, with surgeons becoming more and more specialised. He discusses the importance of building a friendship with the patients that he treats for cancer, and how that is the most rewarding aspect of his job.
