Top Doctors recently had the pleasure of speaking with highly experienced consultant psychiatrist, Dr Maria Martinez Herves, who, here in this article below, outlines the main benefits that intensive community care service can have on our mental well-being.

In terms of mental health and well-being, what are the benefits of intensive community care service?

This type of provision is different from standard care in different ways. It is important that it is comprised by a multidisciplinary team, and there are clear goals to work towards from the initial involvement, as it is oriented towards recovery.

This type of provision often works with a young person, meaning the involvement of the family is paramount. It is not just focused on the medical aspects of the recovery, as also it puts an emphasis on the therapeutic aspects (depending on individual needs, it may include parenting, individual therapy, coping skills, positive behavioural support, sensory assessment, occupational therapy etc).

The child or adolescent and the family are often seen more than twice a week by different members of the team involved in their care (either individually or jointly).

Is there such a thing as an ideal candidate for intensive community care service?

Intensive community care service is meant to be for those children and young people who are in crisis and the difficulties and risks can't be managed with the standard support. It is often offered to prevent inpatient admission of those who are going through a mental health crisis

How long would one typically be advised to undertake this?

It varies based on the needs of the individual. The standard time, however, is typically between eight to 12 weeks

What are the main reasons why one might be recommended for intensive community care service?

A child or young person struggling with their mental health, parents struggling to contain and manage the risk associated with the mental health struggles of their child, and the presentation, and not progressing or improving with regular or standard care.
