Dentists in the UK

Information about dentists

What does a dentist do?

A dentist is the medical professional specialised in the health of the masticatory system. They are responsible for preventing, diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the teeth, gums, jaws and mandible. Their work is essential for maintaining proper chewing, communication and oral wellbeing.

Why might you be referred to a dentist?

A referral to a dentist usually happens when discomfort appears, such as toothache, bleeding gums, difficulty chewing or lesions in the mouth. People also attend for routine check-ups and to treat conditions that affect oral health.

When should you see a dentist?

It is recommended to visit the dentist at least once a year for a dental check-up. You should also book an appointment if you experience symptoms such as toothache, dental trauma, difficulty chewing, swollen gums or bleeding while brushing.

Dental issues are part of everyday health in the UK: nearly 4 in 10 adults have some tooth decay (NatCen & Office for Health Improvement and Disparities, 2023), and more than 10,800 new mouth cancer cases are diagnosed each year (Oral Health Foundation, 2024). Around 4 in 10 adults also say oral health affects their daily life, from eating to socialising (NatCen & OHID, 2023).

Booking regular dental appointments is therefore a normal, sensible habit at any age.

Why choose a dentist?

Choosing a qualified dentist ensures safe and personalised care. Their training allows them to offer accurate diagnoses and tailored treatments for each patient, looking after both the health and the appearance of the smile.
