Dr Andrew Hogg is a highly experienced consultant in sport, exercise and musculoskeletal medicine based in Sheffield, practising at Sheffield Orthopaedics Ltd.
After qualifying in Medicine from Newcastle University in 2006, Dr Hogg undertook further training across a range of acute medical specialties in Manchester. He went on to complete a postgraduate degree in Sport & Exercise Medicine at Trinity College Dublin, before finishing higher specialist training in Sheffield between 2012 and 2017. He was subsequently appointed as South Yorkshire’s first NHS Consultant in Sport & Exercise Medicine at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals in 2020, before focusing more fully on his elite sport roles from 2024 onwards.
Dr Hogg has a postgraduate diploma in musculoskeletal ultrasound, enabling him to deliver accurate diagnoses and perform guided injections where required. He routinely manages complex musculoskeletal problems referred by GPs, physiotherapists and other consultants, and has a particular interest in helping patients of all ages to stay active and return to the activities they enjoy.
Alongside his private practice, Dr Hogg is the Senior Sports Physician at the UK Sports Institute in Sheffield, supporting Olympic and Paralympic athletes across a wide range of sports. He serves as Chief Medical Officer to GB Para Badminton, British Para Table Tennis, Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Northern Diamonds Cricket, as well as being part of the GB Paralympic medical team for Paris 2024. His experience also includes roles as Head of Medical for Scotland Rugby League, match-day doctor for Leeds Rhinos and Premiership Rugby, and a long history of supporting elite athletes in sports such as boxing, basketball and rugby. Over his career, he has been part of the medical teams at multiple Olympic, Paralympic, Commonwealth, World and European Championships.
Dr Hogg is especially passionate about youth and adolescent sport. He has acted as Chief Medical Officer at the Youth Olympics, the UK School Games and for Scottish Rugby’s under-16 squad, as well as holding a specialist NHS clinic at Sheffield Children’s Hospital dedicated to adolescent sports injuries.
In addition to his clinical roles, Dr Hogg is active in medical education, research and governance. He is a council member of the Faculty of Sport & Exercise Medicine UK, an examiner for both the Faculty and the University of Sheffield, and has contributed to national and international concussion guidelines in boxing. He also delivers training for the Rugby Football Union’s Pre-hospital Immediate Care in Sport course and is an accredited UK Anti-Doping educator.
Dr Hogg firmly believes that the treatment and rehabilitation principles he applies to international athletes are equally relevant to patients from all walks of life. His holistic and patient-centred approach ensures that every individual receives the highest standard of care.
