Mr Arijit Mitra is a highly accomplished consultant ophthalmologist based in Birmingham, practising at The Priory Hospital, with a subspecialist focus in surgical and medical retina. His areas of expertise include complex cataract surgery, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, retinal vein occlusion, and advanced vitreoretinal conditions such as retinal detachment, macular hole, and epiretinal membrane, as well as the management of complications arising from cataract procedures.
He completed his medical degree and initial ophthalmology training at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital in India, before undertaking higher specialist training at the West Midlands School of Ophthalmology. He subsequently completed advanced fellowship training in complex vitreoretinal disorders at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. His dedication to the field is reflected in the numerous prizes he has received during his training, alongside his strong academic profile, which includes over 35 peer-reviewed publications and presentations at both national and international conferences.
Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Mitra has a strong commitment to education and training within ophthalmology. He has been actively involved in the development and delivery of simulation-based training courses since 2016. He previously served as the first Simulation Lead for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, where he played a key role in advancing simulation training across the UK, and continues to contribute to the training of future ophthalmologists through his leadership roles.
