Professional statement
Mr Daniel Hardiman-McCartney MBE FCOptom is a highly respected, internationally recognised optometrist based in Fitzrovia, London. He offers private consultations on Mondays at the esteemed London Lauriston Clinic.
With over 20 years of experience across primary care and hospital settings, Daniel is known for his independent, compassionate, and clear approach to eye health. His clinical expertise spans refraction, glaucoma detection and co-management, second opinions, and myopia management in children.
Mr Hardiman-McCartney takes a patient-centred approach to care, combining advanced clinical skills with a strong commitment to empowering patients. His consultations are designed not only to provide accurate diagnoses and treatment plans but also to ensure patients fully understand their eye health and available options. He is especially valued for his supportive guidance following new diagnoses or when patients are considering options for vision correction—whether through glasses, contact lenses, or surgical procedures. He is also happy to collaborate with your ophthalmologist as part of a multidisciplinary care team.
Clinically, glaucoma captured Mr Hardiman-McCartney’s interest early in his career. Often referred to as the “silent thief of sight,” glaucoma can progress without symptoms in its early stages—remaining invisible to the person affected, yet detectable to an optometrist or ophthalmologist.
Over the years, Mr Hardiman-McCartney has encountered many patients trapped in what he describes as the “glaucoma merry-go-round”—referred and forth between opticians and hospital clinics, often without clear answers or continuity of care. To address this, his eye examination includes a comprehensive glaucoma review: a detailed, tailored assessment designed to identify glaucoma at the stage when treatment most effective and ensuring patients avoid unnecessary worry and escape the “glaucoma merry-go-round”.
His approach combines the right tests, (including ORA-tonometry, OCT scans, Humphrey Visual Fields and gonioscopy) at the right time, with expert clinical experiance, shaped by training from some of the world’s leading glaucoma specialists in London and Cambridge. Mr Hardiman-McCartney enables people step off the “glaucoma merry-go-round” and receive excellent, evidence-based care that protects their vision.
For those seeking reassurance, clarity, or a second opinion, Mr Hardiman-McCartney also offers video and telephone consultations, providing accessible, expert advice from the comfort of your home.
In addition to his private work, Mr Hardiman-McCartney MBE serves as a clinical adviser to the College of Optometrists and works within NHS-funded community glaucoma clinics in East Anglia. His past roles include senior glaucoma optometrist at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, diabetic retinopathy optometrist, and senior policy and guidance adviser to both the former NHS England and the UK Government.
He is a Fellow of the College of Optometrists (FCOptom) and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA). In 2022, he was awarded an MBE in Queen Elizabeth II’s Birthday Honours for his outstanding contributions to optometry. He is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers, the oldest existing optical body in the world founded in 1629 and holds the Higher Certificate in Glaucoma completed at Moorfields UCL. A trusted voice in national media, he is recognised for his clear, compassionate communication and commitment to delivering evidence-based, patient-focused care.
