Mr David Potter is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon based in Sheffield, with specialist expertise in shoulder surgery and complex upper limb trauma. He provides comprehensive care for a wide range of shoulder conditions, with particular interests in primary and revision shoulder replacement surgery, arthroscopic stabilisation, and rotator cuff repair.
Mr Potter graduated in medicine from the University of Sheffield in 1990. He completed his general surgical training in Sheffield and Leeds before returning to Sheffield as a specialist registrar in 1995. His commitment to shoulder surgery was reinforced during a fellowship with Professor Christian Gerber in Zurich in 1998, which led to his appointment as shoulder fellow at Wrightington Hospital in 2001. There, he worked with internationally recognised surgeons including Professor John Stanley, Ian Trail and John Haines, gaining invaluable experience in managing complex and challenging cases. During this period, he also trained with Professor Louis Bigliani and Evan Flatow in New York, and attended international meetings in San Diego, Nice and Cape Town. He was appointed consultant orthopaedic surgeon in Sheffield in 2002.
His dedication to advancing shoulder surgery has taken him worldwide, working with leading specialists in Cape Town, Zurich, New York, San Antonio and Houston. In 2003, he was awarded the inaugural Shoulder Arthroscopy Fellowship by the British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS), which supported his advanced training in arthroscopic techniques with Steve Burkhart, Gary Gartsman, and Joe deBeer. He has been an active member of BESS since 1998, contributing research and presenting on shoulder and elbow surgery both nationally and internationally. His main research interests include total shoulder replacement, particularly glenoid surgery, and the management of proximal humeral fractures.
Alongside his clinical work, Mr Potter has a strong commitment to teaching and training. He has taught arthroscopic shoulder surgery at Wrightington Hospital, the Royal College of Surgeons, and at international courses, including co-organising the first Arthrex Advanced Shoulder Arthroscopy Course in Naples, Florida. He has also lectured on shoulder replacement techniques at the Royal College of Surgeons in London and co-convened a “Masterclass in Shoulder Replacement” in Sheffield with Professor Louis Bigliani.
With his wealth of international training and experience, Mr Potter offers patients highly specialised care, applying the latest techniques in both open and arthroscopic shoulder surgery.
