Dr Deepa Narayanan is a dedicated consultant in chemical pathology and metabolic medicine based in Yorkshire and practising at the Optima Clinic and Spire Hull and East Riding Hospital. She has over 10 years of experience specialising in cholesterol management, including managing patients with statin side effects or intolerance and injectable cholesterol-lowering treatments. Her expertise covers inherited conditions affecting cholesterol like familial hypercholesterolaemia including eligibility for genetic testing and lipoprotein (a) screening and cascade testing. She provides lipidology service to patients within Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire with a comprehensive cardiovascular risk assessment with optimisation and management of cholesterol levels after heart attacks, stents, bypass surgery, and stroke.
Dr Narayanan is a Physician with extensive experience in management of metabolic bone conditions, including osteoporosis assessment and management, osteopenia, fracture risk assessment, bone density scan assessment, Vitamin D deficiency, obesity and medical management of kidney stones. Over her NHS career, she has managed thousands of patients with cholesterol and metabolic bone conditions, and is passionate about delivering safe, effective, evidence based and timely clinical care with bespoke treatment options tailored to individual patient needs. She regularly provides clinical advice on interpretation of biochemical tests. As Clinical Lead for the lipid clinic and familial hypercholesterolaemia service at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, she led the launch and implementation of the Yorkshire and Humber regional genetic testing service for familial hypercholesterolaemia in 2017, a well-established and standard clinical service currently.
Dr Narayanan is committed to teaching and training medical and allied health care staff. She is an educator and clinical supervisor and delivers dedicated teaching to postgraduate and internal medicine trainees on clinical placements, specialist nurses and pharmacist.
She is a designated speaker in Lipidology at primary and secondary care meetings in the Yorkshire and Humber region. She is the principal investigator for multicentre cardiovascular outcome trials and research in metabolic bone disease. In recognition of her work, she was a finalist in 2018 for the Golden Hearts Awards for Outstanding Clinician.
