Dr Esther Natalie Oliva is a highly experienced consultant haematologist with a distinguished career in both clinical practice and academic research. She currently serves as a senior consultant in the department of haematology at London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust, where she specialises in myeloproliferative neoplasms, myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), acute myeloid and lymphoblastic leukaemias, and immune-related haematological disorders.
Dr Oliva completed her medical degree and specialist training in general haematology at the University of Messina, Italy. From 1998 to 2024, she practised at the haematology unit of GOM in Reggio Calabria, where she led the section dedicated to myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), aplastic anaemia, and other rare blood disorders.
In recognition of her academic contributions, she was appointed associate professor of haematological diseases, oncology, and rheumatology in 2018.
A recognised expert in quality of life assessment in haematology, Dr Oliva developed two unique patient-reported outcome tools: QOL-E, specifically designed for patients with MDS, and HM-PRO, aimed at individuals with malignant haematological conditions. She has led and coordinated numerous clinical studies focused on both pharmacological therapies in haematology and quality of life research.
In 2024, she was appointed to the Specialised Working Groups Committee of the European Haematology Association (EHA), reflecting her influence and leadership in the field.
Dr Oliva is also Vice President and co-founder of QOL-ONE, a research association based in Reggio Calabria dedicated to advancing quality of life studies in haematology. She is an active member of multiple international haematology societies and currently sits on both the Global MDS Treatment Guidelines Committee and the European Guidelines Committee for the management of Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP).
In addition to her clinical and research work, Dr Oliva serves as an editor for several peer-reviewed medical journals, contributing to the dissemination of cutting-edge haematological knowledge on an international scale.
