Dr Fairoz Abdul is a consultant interventional cardiologist based in Birmingham. He specialises in conditions of the heart, such as chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, fainting (syncope), coronary artery disease, heart murmurs, and high blood pressure (hypertension). He has expertise in performing coronary angioplasty.
Dr Abdul qualified in 199 from Bangalore University in India, and upon moving to the UK, underwent postgraduate general medicine and cardiology training in the West Midlands and Wales. He completed additional advanced training at the University Hospital of Wales and the Morriston Cardiac Centre, and in 2017, he was awarded a Certificate of Completion of Training in cardiology, with a focus on cardiac intervention. He then undertook an advanced one-year fellowship at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital in interventional cardiology. He has an MD from Cardiff University for research on the effects of nitrates on antiplatelet drugs in patients with coronary artery disease, which was conducted at the Welsh Heart Research Institute.
He was appointed consultant cardiologist in 2018, and operates a specialised heart clinic, where he treats a variety of cardiovascular conditions, utilising techniques such as stenting, atherectomy, and valvuloplasty, and performs diagnostic procedures, both invasive and non-invasive, such as coronary CTs, structural heart CTs (TAVI CTs), and cardiac catheterisations.
When not in the clinic, Dr Abdul is involved in NHS management across human resources, clinical supervision and governance. He is an organising director for a simulation training course for interventional fellows, and leads the fellowship programme at Birmingham City Hospital. He is an active researcher and has several publications in international cardiology journals, and he is a principal investigator for multi-centre research projects regarding valvular disease and coronary intervention.
