Professional statement
Mr Graeme Hancock is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising in knee surgery at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. His practice covers all aspects of knee surgery, with a particular focus on knee preservation.
He has completed a complex osteotomy fellowship and provides advanced knee cartilage repair and regeneration services within the NHS, a provision offered by only a select number of centres in the UK. Mr Hancock takes a personalised approach to care, tailoring treatments to each patient’s individual needs, goals and lifestyle.
Originally from the North East, Mr Hancock graduated from Sheffield University Medical School in 2010. He completed all of his specialty training in South Yorkshire, successfully undertaking the MRCS examination before core surgical training, and passing the FRCS (Tr & Orth) examination in 2020. During his time as a specialty registrar on the South Yorkshire rotation, he was involved in multiple research and service development projects, resulting in several publications in international journals and presentations at both national and international conferences.
Following the completion of his specialty training and Certificate of Completion of Training in October 2021, Mr Hancock pursued further advanced knee surgery experience as the Sheffield Knee Fellow, working under Mr Paul Sutton, Mr Jeremy Brown and Mr James Stoddard. Here, he gained specialised experience in ligament reconstruction, management of patellofemoral instability, and cartilage surgery. He then completed a second fellowship with a focus on complex osteotomy as the final fellow of Mr Matt Dawson, former co-chair of the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery & Arthroscopy (ESSKA) osteotomy group. During this fellowship, he developed expertise in individualised knee osteotomy to help patients avoid knee replacement while remaining active, as well as complex osteotomies to manage ligament and rotational issues.
Mr Hancock was appointed as a consultant in knee surgery at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals in April 2023. He has since established a modern osteotomy practice and closely monitors patient outcomes using Patient Reported Outcome Measures, alongside national registries for ligament reconstruction and osteotomy. He is also dedicated to knee preservation, striving to repair meniscal injuries wherever possible to retain natural knee function and mobility.
