Information about gynaecologists and obstetricians

What does a gynaecologist do?

A gynaecologist is the specialist responsible for the health of the female reproductive system. They assess, diagnose, and treat conditions affecting the ovaries, uterus, and vagina. They also monitor gynaecological health throughout a woman’s life and, within the field of obstetrics, oversee pregnancy care and childbirth.

Why are you referred to a gynaecologist?

Patients are referred to this specialist when there are symptoms or changes affecting the female reproductive system, menstrual disorders, infections, or a suspected gynaecological condition. They are also consulted for antenatal care or when planning a pregnancy.

When should you see a gynaecologist?

Gynaecology and obstetrics address many of the most common health concerns affecting women. For example, endometriosis affects approximately 1 in 10 women of reproductive age worldwide (around 190 million), according to the World Health Organization, and polycystic ovary syndrome can affect between 1 and 1.3 in 10 women, often without diagnosis (WHO). Consultations are also common for menstrual irregularities, fibroids, ovarian cysts, or concerns about fertility.

Seeing a specialist is part of routine women’s healthcare and may be advisable if persistent pelvic pain occurs, periods become very irregular, symptoms last for several cycles or affect daily life, as well as during pregnancy or when planning to conceive.

Why choose a gynaecologist?

A gynaecologist provides specialist diagnosis and clinical follow-up at every stage of a woman’s life. Their expertise helps detect conditions early, monitor reproductive health and supervise pregnancy safely.

For your appointment, it is advisable to bring previous medical reports, test results, and notes about any recent symptoms or changes. If pregnancy is confirmed or suspected, the specialist will assess the situation and may request additional tests.
