Dr Mumtaz Hayat is a highly experienced and trusted consultant gastroenterologist specialising in general gastroenterology, endoscopy, and general medicine. He is an accredited colonoscopist for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme and serves as the lead colonoscopist for the programme within the Trust. Dr Hayat is available for private consultations at Nuffield Newcastle Hospital and Cobalt Hospital.
Dr Hayat has a particular clinical interest in therapeutic endoscopy, including colonoscopy, endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), colorectal stenting, and endoscopic full-thickness resection (eFTRD) of colonic polyps and early colon cancer. He is also experienced in endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and the management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
After earning his medical degree from Punjab University, Pakistan, in 1987, Dr Hayat completed his initial training in Medicine and Gastroenterology before moving to the UK. He undertook his specialist registrar training in the Yorkshire region.
Dr Hayat maintains an active interest in clinical research, focusing on IBD, Helicobacter pylori, and lymphocytic gastritis. He spent over two years conducting full-time research at Leeds General Infirmary, studying venous thrombotic risk factors and push enteroscopy. He is a member of the British Society of Gastroenterology and the British Medical Association.
