Professor Nick Donos serves as the Director of Research, Professor and Chair of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry at the Centre for Oral Clinical Research (COCR), Institute of Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL).
In 2024, Professor Donos was honoured with the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) Distinguished Scientist in Periodontal Disease Award and the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) Distinguished Scientist Award. His previous accolades include the IADR Periodontology Group Award in Periodontal Regenerative Medicine (2011) and the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Clinical Research Award (2019) for his role as co-author. He also received the European Association of Osseointegration (EAO) Basic Science Research Award in 2004.
Throughout his career, Professor Donos has also been recognised with several honorary titles: Honorary Professor at the Faculty of Dentistry in Hong Kong (2009), Adjunct Professor at the Dental School-Griffith University in Australia (2012), Honorary Professor at UCL-Eastman Dental Institute (2015), and Honorary Professor at the School of Dentistry, University of Queensland, Australia (2019).
Professor Donos has held significant leadership roles, including serving as Past President of the British Society of Periodontology & Implant Dentistry (BSP) in 2020, Academic Representative of the Committee of the Association of Dental Implantology (ADI) in the UK, and board member of the Osteology Foundation (OF) in Switzerland, where he also chairs the Science Committee. Additionally, he leads the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) Education Committee (PEC).
Professor Donos contributes to the academic community as Associate Editor for Periodontology 2000, a topic editor (2022) for Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, and as a member of the editorial boards of various international peer-reviewed journals in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry. His scholarly work includes over 275 peer-reviewed publications, editing five textbooks, and authoring or co-authoring 15 book chapters in these fields.
Moreover, Professor Donos has been actively involved in consensus conferences for major organisations such as the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP), the European Association of Osseointegration (EAO), The International Team for Oral Implantology (ITI), and the Osteology Foundation, contributing to the development of the most current evidence-based guidelines for clinical practice in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry.
In clinical practice, Professor Donos has extensive experience in advanced treatment modalities for patients with severe periodontal disease, including both non-surgical and surgical approaches. His expertise spans periodontal and bone tissue regeneration, the replacement of missing teeth with dental implants, and the non-surgical and surgical treatment of peri-implant diseases, such as peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis. He frequently shares his knowledge on these topics through lectures at national and international conferences.
