Dr Prithviraj Rao is a highly experienced consultant in paediatric gastroenterology with specialist expertise in digestive, liver and nutritional disorders in children. He initially trained in paediatrics in Newcastle before undertaking advanced subspecialty training in paediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at leading centres including Leeds, Newcastle and Sheffield Children’s Hospitals.
Following completion of his specialist training, he was appointed Consultant in Paediatric Gastroenterology at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. His diverse training across several major centres has enabled him to integrate a wide range of best clinical practices into his approach to patient care.
During his time at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, Dr Rao has played a key role in advancing paediatric gastroenterology services. He has led initiatives to streamline the management of paediatric inflammatory bowel disease and has developed important clinical protocols to improve care pathways. He also established and delivered the first training course in paediatric upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and continues to contribute as faculty on national courses covering paediatric wireless capsule endoscopy, colonoscopy and therapeutic endoscopy.
Dr Rao has had the opportunity to work alongside leading pioneers in paediatric endoscopy, gaining expertise in advanced and innovative techniques such as double balloon enteroscopy and endoscopic pyloromyotomy. He has presented his work at numerous international meetings and has published widely in the field, in addition to being invited to lecture and teach at international conferences and training events.

He is known for his empathetic approach and commitment to ensuring that patients and parents feel supported, informed and fully involved in decisions about their care.
