Mr Sanjeev Sharma is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Barnsley Hospital, with a private practice at Sheffield Orthopaedics Ltd. He specialises in primary and revision hip and knee joint replacement, peri-prosthetic fracture management, and knee arthroscopy.
Mr Sharma graduated from the University of Delhi in 1996 before beginning his medical career in the Mersey Deanery. He later moved to South Yorkshire and pursued a Master’s degree in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Liverpool. In 2006, he joined the South Yorkshire Trauma and Orthopaedics training programme as a specialist registrar, excelling throughout his training under the guidance of eminent surgeons such as Mr John Getty. In 2009, he was awarded the prestigious Arthur Edward Burton Memorial Prize for achieving the best performance in the FRCS (Orth) examination. His academic work has been widely recognised, with numerous presentations at national and international meetings and publications in peer-reviewed journals.
He went on to complete the renowned Sir John Charnley Arthroplasty Fellowship at Wrightington Hospital (2011–2012), working under Professors Peter Kay and Martyn Porter. He also undertook a Trauma Fellowship at Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham with Professor Chris Moran, gaining expertise in managing complex fractures around hip and knee joint replacements. In addition, he received further subspecialty fellowship training at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry, alongside international travelling fellowships to world-leading centres including the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, Helios Endo-Klinik in Germany, and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
Appointed as a Consultant at Barnsley Hospital in 2013, Mr Sharma has since developed a distinguished practice in hip and knee surgery. He has held several leadership positions, including Clinical Audit Lead, Royal College Tutor, and Surgical Site Infection Lead, and currently serves as Clinical Lead for his department. He is also an Assigned Educational Supervisor for orthopaedic specialist registrars in the South Yorkshire rotation.
Deeply committed to education and training, Mr Sharma is a faculty member on national training courses, an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Sheffield, and an examiner for the University’s Medical School. He also serves on the National Panel of Examiners for the FRCS (Orth) examination, supporting the development of the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons.
