Mr Syed Soulat Raza is an esteemed consultant hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgeon specialising in the treatment of liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and and bile duct conditions. He is based in the Liver Unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and also consults privately at The Harborne Hospital.
Fluent in English, Urdu, and Punjabi, he provides care for patients with both benign and malignant diseases. His expertise covers both minimally invasive (keyhole) and open surgical techniques, with particular experience in performing single-stage gallbladder removal and bile duct stone clearance. He also leads Birmingham’s programme for Normothermic Regional Perfusion, an advanced method used in liver transplantation.
He obtained his medical degree from Baqai Medical University in Karachi in 2004, followed by early surgical training in West Yorkshire and Leeds. He then spent three years working in the specialist liver, pancreas, and transplant unit at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds. Subsequently, he completed higher surgical training in the West Midlands, focusing on liver, pancreas, and transplant surgery, and finished his final training years in the Liver Unit before his appointment as a consultant.
In addition to his clinical practice, Mr Raza has authored and contributed to numerous research publications in surgical journals. He is actively involved in surgical education, serving as Programme Director for the Midlands FRCS course and as Treasurer of the West Midlands Surgical Society.
