Many people are concerned about the appearance of their skin, particularly focusing on sagging skin around the face and neck. Renuvion is a cosmetic treatment option which can be used to rectify such concerns.

Here to explain more about the treatment and answer any questions you may have  is distinguished consultant plastic surgeon Mr Charles Durrant.

What is Renuvion and how does it work as a cosmetic treatment?

Renuvion is a relatively new technology that can be an extremely useful tool for the cosmetic surgeon. Renuvion is an energy device that uses helium plasma energy along with radiofrequency energy to superheat tissues from the inside and cause tightening of the supporting structures beneath the skin. This allows a much greater amount of skin retraction, either on its own or in combination with liposuction techniques, particularly VaserLipo.

It also stimulates the production of collagen, meaning that the effects of the procedure continue to improve for several months after surgery. Patients should expect to see results quite quickly, within a few weeks of surgery. However, the full benefits of Renuvion take around four to six months to become apparent. Renuvion is the only energy device currently FDA approved for skin tightening following liposuction.

What areas of the body can be treated with Renuvion technology?

Renuvion can be used almost anywhere on the body. It is often used around the face for tightening of the jowls (sagging loose skin below the neckline) and neck, and can be used as a minimally invasive alternative to a surgical facelift in patients with relatively mild sagging of the skin. Renuvion can be used on the lower eyelids and even the eyebrows and forehead. It is often used on the neck to give a tighter and more youthful appearance and is an excellent tool for tightening skin of the arms, thighs, knees, buttocks and abdomen, often in combination with Vaser or other forms of liposuction.

What are the potential benefits and results of undergoing a Renuvion procedure?

Most liposuction procedures are successful at removing fat but very few have a positive effect on skin retraction, with the notable exception of Vaser. That being said, the amount of skin retraction that is possible with Vaser is limited. As a result, many patients choose Renuvion as an alternative. Renuvion enables further tightening of the skin and new collagen formation, increasing the quality of the skin. In many cases, using a combination of Liposuction and Renuvion, which can eliminate the need for surgical skin removal entirely, resulting in dramatic improvements with lower downtime and far less scarring.

How is the Renuvion procedure performed, and is it minimally invasive?

The Renuvion treatment is a minimally invasive procedure. It involves making a tiny incision in the skin and a fine wand is passed through this incision. The plasma comes from the tip of the wand, meaning that the scars are tiny and very easily hidden in natural creases.

Are there any potential risks or side effects associated with Renuvion treatments?

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks associated with Renuvion. The procedure does pose the risk of bleeding, infection, asymmetry or contour irregularities. Due to the heat produced, burns to the skin are a possibility. However, by taking great care and choosing an experienced surgeon for the procedure, such risks are a rare occurrence.
