Question 1

What does a urologist do?

Accepted Answer

A urologist is the medical specialist in the study, diagnosis and treatment of conditions of the urinary tract in men and women, and of the male reproductive system. They also deal with the adrenal glands and the retroperitoneum.

Question 2

Why might you be referred to a urologist?

Accepted Answer

A referral to a urologist usually happens when symptoms appear such as difficulty or pain when passing urine, blood in the urine, kidney stone pain, incontinence or problems related to the prostate or sexual function.

Question 3

When should you see a urologist?

Accepted Answer

It is recommended to see a urologist once a year for routine check-ups. It is also worth booking an appointment if you notice signs such as difficulty passing urine, blood in the urine, passing stones, kidney pain, urgency or involuntary urine leaks, urinary discomfort after sex, or changes in the skin of the penis. Urological issues affect millions of people in the UK at some point in life. Prostate cancer is now the most common cancer in men, with around 68,000 new cases a year (World Cancer Research Fund & Cancer Research UK, 2023), and more than 1 in 10 people will have kidney stones at some stage (NHS, 2024). Between 3 and 6 million people in the UK live with urinary incontinence (NHS, 2023). If you notice blood in your urine, changes in bladder habits, ongoing pain or symptoms affecting sleep, work or daily life, booking a consultation with a urologist is a routine step to get clear answers and a plan.

Question 4

Why choose a urologist?

Accepted Answer

Choosing a qualified urologist ensures safe and personalised care. Their training allows them to offer accurate diagnoses and tailored treatments for each patient, looking after both urinary health and sexual and reproductive wellbeing.
