Skin problems affect people of all ages, from children to adults, and can range from mild irritations to serious conditions requiring medical attention. Recognising common skin issues and knowing when to seek help from a dermatologist is essential for maintaining healthy skin.

In children, common skin problems include eczema, diaper rash, and viral infections such as chickenpox. Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, causes red, itchy patches and often appears on the face and limbs. Diaper rash results from prolonged exposure to moisture and irritants, causing redness and discomfort. Viral infections like chickenpox present with itchy blisters and require careful management to avoid complications. While many childhood skin issues resolve with home care and over-the-counter treatments, persistent symptoms, spreading rashes, or signs of infection such as pus or fever warrant a dermatologist’s evaluation.

Adults frequently face conditions like acne, psoriasis, rosacea, and fungal infections. Acne, though commonly associated with teenagers, can persist into adulthood, causing inflamed pimples and cysts. Psoriasis causes thick, scaly patches often on elbows and knees and can significantly affect quality of life. Rosacea leads to facial redness and visible blood vessels, sometimes mistaken for sunburn. Fungal infections, including athlete’s foot and yeast infections, cause itching and scaling. Adults should consider seeing a dermatologist if skin problems are chronic, worsening, painful, or accompanied by other symptoms such as bleeding or changes in moles.

In both children and adults, any sudden skin changes, severe itching, persistent rashes, or unusual growths should prompt a dermatologist visit. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent complications and improve outcomes. Dermatologists offer expert care, including prescription medications, specialized therapies, and guidance on skincare routines tailored to individual needs. In summary, while many skin problems can be managed at home, recognizing warning signs and consulting a dermatologist when necessary ensures the best care for skin health at any age.
