How is myopia managed?
What is myopia?
Myopia, commonly known as short-sightedness, is a refractive error in which distant objects appear blurred while near vision remains clear. It occurs when the eye grows too long from front to back or when the cornea is too curved, causing light to focus in front of the retina rather than directly on it.
Myopia has become increasingly common worldwide, particularly among children and adolescents. In recent years, eye care professionals have placed greater emphasis not only on correcting myopia but also on slowing its progression through a strategy known as myopia management.
How is myopia reversed or corrected?
Traditional methods of correcting myopia include spectacles and standard contact lenses, which improve vision but do not address the underlying progression of the condition. Myopia management, however, aims to slow the rate at which the eye lengthens during childhood. This is important because higher levels of myopia later in life are associated with an increased risk of eye diseases such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, and myopic macular degeneration.
Several evidence-based approaches are currently used in myopia management. Specialised optical treatments include orthokeratology (overnight contact lenses that temporarily reshape the cornea), soft contact lenses designed for myopia control, and specially designed spectacle lenses that alter peripheral focus on the retina. Another widely used option is low-dose atropine eye drops, which have been shown to slow myopic progression in many children when used under medical supervision.
Lifestyle factors also play a significant role in managing myopia. Increasing time spent outdoors has been shown to reduce the risk of developing myopia in children. Encouraging regular breaks from prolonged near activities, such as reading or using digital devices, can also support healthier visual habits. Regular eye examinations are essential so that eye care professionals can monitor changes in vision and adjust treatment plans when necessary.
Myopia management represents a proactive approach to protecting long-term eye health. By combining early detection, appropriate optical treatments, and healthy lifestyle habits, clinicians and families can work together to reduce the progression of myopia and help safeguard vision for the future.
