If your face is showing signs of ageing, such as a noticeable loss of volume, droopiness and a lack of elasticity particularly on the lower half of your face, the mini facelift may be right for you. The cosmetic procedure repositions and tightens the skin around the neck and jawline, which has lead to jowls. It can be combined with other procedures, such as an eyebrow lift or dermal fillers.

Mr Giovanni Ferrando is a leading plastic and reconstructive surgeon in London and here he explains how it differs from a traditional facelift and what you can expect from the treatment.

What is the difference between a mini facelift and a normal facelift?

The difference is in the width of the detachment of the skin and the length of the scars. During a mini facelift, the décollement of the skin is less aggressive and the scar stops at the upper portion of the ear and behind the ear, it is shorter.

What results can be achieved from a mini facelift?

The result, if the surgeon works correctly on the muscles, can be similar to the results which are achieved from a normal facelift. When the major problem is on the neck and especially in cases with a heavy neck, the best indication is a normal facelift.

Who is a good candidate for this?

The good candidate for a mini facelift is a patient that is not happy enough with simple procedures like threads or contour definition with filler. It is ideal for those who want to have a more visible result or when the skin is too loose.

Can it be combined with other procedures?

Yes, it’s very common to combine the mini facelift with other procedures like fat transfer, nanofat, injections, surgical peels and dermabrasion etc. These procedures can improve facelift result.

What is the recovery time like?

In this dynamic world, where we are always in rush, short recovery time is very important. This can explain the success of the mini facelift. The recovery time is a week.

How long do results last?

The result can last longer than 10 years if the surgeon works well on the muscles. However the operation blocks the ageing process for a long time therefore the treatment, even in the long run, may vary due to the passing of the years, which can be considered permanent. In any case, if overtime one wants to refresh their look, the facelift can also be done and is usually performed under local anaesthesia.
