Nasal polyps are non-cancerous, soft, and painless growths that develop in the lining of the nasal passages or sinuses. They often occur in response to chronic inflammation and are associated with conditions such as asthma, allergies, sinus infections, and certain immune disorders. While small nasal polyps may go unnoticed, larger or clustered polyps can obstruct nasal passages, causing significant symptoms and affecting quality of life.

The exact cause of nasal polyps remains unclear, but chronic inflammation in the nasal passages is a primary factor. Some individuals may have a genetic predisposition, where their immune system reacts excessively to irritants or allergens.

Common triggers include chronic rhinosinusitis, hay fever, and environmental irritants like dust or smoke. Nasal polyps are more common in adults, especially those over 40, and often occur in individuals with asthma or aspirin sensitivity.

Symptoms of nasal polyps can vary depending on their size and location. Common signs include persistent nasal congestion, a reduced or lost sense of smell, nasal drainage, facial pain or pressure, and frequent sinus infections. In severe cases, they may lead to difficulty breathing through the nose or contribute to sleep disturbances such as snoring or sleep apnoea.

Treatment for nasal polyps focuses on reducing inflammation, alleviating symptoms, and addressing underlying conditions. Medications, such as corticosteroid nasal sprays or oral steroids, are often the first line of treatment to shrink the polyps and relieve symptoms. For individuals with recurring or resistant nasal polyps, biologic therapies targeting specific inflammatory pathways may be effective.

In cases where medications are insufficient, endoscopic sinus surgery may be recommended. This minimally invasive procedure involves the removal of polyps and clearing obstructions in the nasal passages, improving airflow and reducing the likelihood of recurrence.

Preventive strategies include managing allergies and asthma, avoiding irritants, and using saline nasal rinses to maintain nasal hygiene. If you experience persistent nasal symptoms, consult an ENT specialist for an accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment plan. With proper care, individuals with nasal polyps can achieve significant relief and improved quality of life.
