If you’re looking to go under the knife to improve the appearance of your abdomen following pregnancy or after weight loss, then you may be wondering how a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) compares to liposuction in terms of results and price. Here, top plastic surgeon Mr Nilesh Sojitra explains how the procedures differ.

What’s the difference between a tummy tuck and liposuction?

A tummy tuck otherwise known as an abdominoplasty is a procedure whereby skin and underlying fat are removed. Often if necessary, an underlying muscle repair can be done to tighten muscles that have been loosened by pregnancy. This can be a MINI or a FULL abdominoplasty depending on what exactly is required.

Liposuction, on the other hand, is a process whereby fat is removed by sucking it out using a tube. It relies on having good skin elasticity in order that the skin shrinks after the procedure.

In which circumstances are either required? (body types, weight, goals)

When one has a loose 'apron' as after weight loss or large pregnancies then often an abdominoplasty is the best way forward and this can be combined with liposuction if needed. If there are stubborn areas of fat deposits then liposuction is better given the elasticity of the skin is good.

How would I know which one is right for my body?

The best way to know what is right is by having a full consultation with a consultant accredited surgeon rather than a nurse advisor. The surgeon should be accredited by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) or the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS).

In your expert opinion, which one is most effective?

Both can be very effective and really depends on what is required. An abdominoplasty is a very powerful tightening procedure.

What are the expected results for both procedures?

The expected results are very good if a careful patient selection is exercised and patients also do their part by keeping their BMI low and refraining from nicotine products before and after surgery. Patients must all be realistic as to their expectations and not get carried away by social media images.

Does the cost of either vary significantly?

As of November 2019, an abdominoplasty costs around £6,500-7,800 and liposuction between £3,500-6,000*.
