Sinus and polyps surgery is a common procedure aimed at treating chronic sinus issues and nasal polyps that do not respond to medication. Nasal polyps are soft, painless growths that develop on the lining of the nasal passages or sinuses due to chronic inflammation, often caused by allergies, asthma, or infections. When these polyps grow large or become numerous, they can block the nasal passages, leading to breathing difficulties, sinus infections, and a reduced sense of smell.

The goal of sinus and polyps surgery is to remove these obstructive growths and improve sinus drainage, thereby relieving symptoms and improving the patient’s quality of life. The most frequently performed procedure is Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS). During FESS, surgeons use a small camera called an endoscope to visualise the sinuses and remove polyps and any diseased tissue through the nostrils, avoiding external incisions.

This minimally invasive technique typically results in less pain, quicker recovery times, and fewer complications compared to traditional open surgery. Patients usually undergo the surgery under general or local anesthesia and can often return home the same day.

Post-surgery, patients may experience some nasal congestion, mild bleeding, and discomfort, which usually resolve within a few weeks. It is crucial to follow the surgeon’s aftercare instructions, including saline nasal sprays and avoiding strenuous activities, to promote healing and reduce the risk of recurrence.

While surgery can significantly improve symptoms, it may not completely prevent polyps from returning, especially in individuals with ongoing allergies or inflammation. Therefore, ongoing management with medications such as corticosteroids or allergy treatments is often necessary.

In summary, sinus and polyps surgery is a safe and effective option for those suffering from chronic sinus blockage and nasal polyps, providing relief and improving overall nasal function when other treatments fail.
