You might have heard of a tummy tuck procedure before, but what exactly is a mini tummy tuck? Mr Maisam Fazel, a skilled aesthetic surgeon, explains the differences and why this version of the procedure can be a good option for those with less abdominal skin to be removed.

Who would have a mini tummy tuck?

The mini tummy tuck is a less invasive version of a full tummy tuck (i.e. abdominoplasty). A mini tummy tuck is often recommended to those with less excess abdominal skin to be removed or who do not have a significantly protruding abdominal muscle wall. Often this describes patients whose abdominal skin is beginning to sag due to age, or those who have an overall slim physique but wish to have a more desirable shape around their abdomen.

What does a mini tummy tuck involve?

Either local or general anaesthesia can be used for a mini tummy tuck. An incision is made across the abdomen for skin removal. The length of the incision will depend on how much skin needs to be removed, but in general, incisions for a mini tummy tuck are much smaller than those made for a traditional abdominoplasty. Hence, sometimes, a mini tummy tuck is referred to as a ‘scarless tummy tuck’. In a mini tummy tuck, the surgeon does not have to reposition the navel. Liposuction may be used to help sculpt the tummy into the desired shape. Once the incision is made and the muscles have been tightened, the skin is stretched downwards and stitched into place.

What happens after surgery?

Patients can usually return home from the hospital within a few hours of having mini tummy tuck surgery. They can expect some postoperative pain which can be managed with simple painkillers. The recovery time for a mini tummy tuck is similar to that after having liposuction and patients can usually return to week within a few days of having surgery. However, it is important to refrain from more strenuous activities for a few weeks. You may be given a post-surgical compression garment to wear for a few weeks as well to help with healing.

What can you expect from the results?

Although every patient is different, in height, weight, fat distribution, shape and muscle/skin laxity, patients can expect a flatter abdomen following a mini tummy tuck procedure.
