What to expect with pectoral implants

Alongside the traditional six-pack that many men aspire to have, there are an increasing number of men who wish to have better definition in their chest muscles.
Surgical procedures have developed so much that it is now possible for those who want “pecs” to have implants to enhance them. We interviewed plastic surgeon Mr Foued Hamza about pectoral implants and what patients can expect.
How is the pectoral implant inserted?
Pectoral implants are inserted by a trans axillary incision and are placed under the pectoral muscle. The implants are inserted under general anaesthesia, so the patient is asleep and the operation lasts for about two hours.
What are the possible risks and complications from the pectoral implant procedure?
Common risks associated with pectoral implants include:
Hematoma Infection Scar problems Displacement of the implant or rotation of the implant Implant capsular contracture (very rare)
What is the recovery time and will results be instant?
The results are instant like the breast implants, but it takes at least six months for the implants to settle and to see the final result. Recovery generally takes about a week, but usually, patients can leave the hospital on the same day, after the operation.
What is the average cost range of pectoral implants?
The average cost is from £7,000 to £9,000 for bespoke implants.
What can patients expect from their recovery?
There is no major pain after the procedure, patients will just feel as if they have done really hard muscle exercises, so they may feel some tightness and swelling. Patients can return to work after a week and are advised not to raise their arms.
How long do pectoral implants last?
Pectoral implants are different from breast implants as they are solid implants, so their life expectancy is at least 20 years long and if there is no problem there is no need to change them.
Are there any patients not suited to having pectoral implants?
